Chlorine (Cl2) is a synthesis gas generally
produced from electrolysis of Sodium Chloride.
Industrial Use
- Chlorine is used for the manufacture of polyvinylchloride (PVC) and other
various organic products (such as solvents, pesticides, herbicides,
refrigerants). In inorganic synthesis, Cl2 is largely used in the production
of titanium dioxide by the rutile process. Chlorine is also used for the
purification of aluminium.
- Pulp bleaching processes use chlorine.
- In semiconductor manufacturing chlorine is used in plasma etching of
aluminum and other metal layers. Chlorine is also used for drinking and
swimming water purification.
